Who has not paused to watch the full moon float above the horizon to light the night sky , or marvelled at the way its shape appears to change from day to day ? Unique in our solar system , the moon is more than a quarter of its planets diameter , its ideally designed to help support life on Earth because its tidal forces keep our oceans moving and cleanse our shorelines . Craters large and small scar its surface . reminders of a cosmic catastrophe that engulfed our planet too , not so long ago . Genesis 6-9
