Studies have been made of the mutational differences in the mitochondrial DNA of women of various ethnic groups today , and in the DNA on the Y Chromosomes of men . Estimates of mutation rates enabled the geneticists to come up with embarrassingly recent dates for the common human ancestor , NOT...... MILLIONS OF YEARS . Then more accurate values for mutation rates weere published in Nature Genetics giving dates of just a few thousand years .

Mutational differences between the mitochondrial DNA of women of various ethnic groups leads to the conclussion that we are all descended from one woman . Mitochondrial Eve , estimated from mutation rates to have lived 100,000 to 200,000 years ago .
