Rapid carving out of landscapes has been witnessed since 1963 on the newly formed volcanic island of Surtsey , off the coast of Iceland :

Despite the somewhat haphazard arrival of species , we now have a fully functioning ecosystem... . The plants support insects that attract birds that bring more plants . The Island Surtsey , a volcanoe formed in 1963 has excited geographers , who marvel that canyons , gullies and other land features that typically take tens of thousands or millions of years to form where created in less than a decade .
