Charles Darwin knew that his theory was open to ridicule and he appealed to readers of his ideas to not ridicule him . We read the acceptance of Darwin knowing his theories indeed were fatally flawed , in his own words .
“…I am quite conscious that my speculations run ...beyond the bounds of true science….It is a mere rag of an hypothesis with as many flaw[s] & holes as sound parts.” Charles Darwin to Asa Gray, cited by Adrian Desmond and James Moore, Darwin, (New York: W.W. Norton and Company, 1991) pp. 456, 475.
BUT , his petition clearly fell on deaf ears in many instances . German scientists at first laughed at Charles Darwin's theories .
“Darwin’s ominous book [Origin of Species] had been available in Bronn’s translation for two years. The German professional zoologists, botanists and geologists almost all regarded it [Darwin’s theory] as absolute nonsense. Agassiz, Geibel, Keferstein, and so many others, laughed until they were red in the face –”
